Arizona Ranger Lt Rodney Preuss

SV Rotary honored the August Student of the Month, Steven Saunders, a senior at Buena High School. Steven is Student Body President and a varsity baseball play-er. He is currently being scouted by several major college and MLB scouts with hopes of landing a scholarship and perhaps a signing bonus.

He was nominated for the Student of the Month honor by his teachers, coaches and counselors with the final selection made by Principal Dawn Maddock, also in attendance at the Rotary meeting along with Steven’s parents, Steven and Alicia.

He delivered an inspirational 5 minute speech based on Rotary’s 4 Way Test that magically combined the moral and ethical values and lessons of the 4 Way Test with poetic rhymes as seen through youthful eyes. President Nancy Fusco presented Steven with a certificate, $100 of Chamber of Commerce Bucks and a Rotary 4 Way Test coin.

Lt. Rodney Preuss, Executive Officer of the Arizona Rangers entertained the club with slides and stories of the Rangers history from 1860 to the present. Originally founded as a citizen militia, the Ranger’s first Captain was Burton C. Mossman of Bisbee in 1901. In 1909 the Arizona Rangers "ACT" was repealed in anticipation of statehood and the organization nearly disappeared.

In 1957 the Rangers came back and were chartered not as "peace officers" but as a volunteer organization of men and women to support law enforcement and to offer law enforce-ment support statewide. Rangers today serve as agents of law enforcement officers and perform valuable assistance to youth and high school events such as athletic events, "Project Graduation" in Sierra Vista, parades and a host of community events such as the 4th of July celebration at Veteran’s Park.

Some Rangers are mounted officers and participate in community parades, color guard duty and other civic and youth activities. The Arizona Rangers are always looking for volunteers and welcome inquiries on their website.

The Rotary meeting concluded with the installation of its newest member, Matt Combe, Executive Director of Life Care Center in Sierra Vista. (
